Great Egret - Bird Photography Weekly

IMG_4482

The Great Egret is one of my favorite herons. It's pure white plumage makes it hard to miss. Nothing is more graceful than watching one glide just a few feet above the water.

It's the largest of the egrets, and did you know that the Great Egret is the symbol of the National Audubon Society.

Pretty cool, huh?

  1. Nice captures of the Great Egret Alan! It is also one of my favorites.

The first shot of the bird preening in the shade of the tree leaves makes me feel like I'm standing right there.

  8. You take such great photos Alan. Love the egrets! We have lots out here. There is a dead tree across the creek --- the clean white against the green of the trees behind it in the brown of the old tree--wow. (my camera is not enough of a zoom to get it)

  13. All,
    Thanks for the kind complements!

    Les,
These photos were taken over at the VA Living Museum in Newport News. Cool place to visit if you haven't been.

  14. I'm with you on that, Alan. I love egrets, and luckily get to see them pretty much year-round. You got some great shots, too!

  15. great shot of the egret preening himself. they can be challenging to expose correctly, but you have done nicely.

i was stalking one during feeding time, but he was on to me...and very aware of the large, leafy tree branch that blocked any chance of a shot, which he didn't hesitate to position himself behind the entire time.

    congrats on your capture!

  16. ...I don't get to see these birds too often in Cincy, but I really enjoyed seeing them in South Carolina this summer. They are gorgeous (especially with that lime-green eye patch during breeding season). Lovely photos....
