Movie 'Earth' - April 2009

My son and I went to the movies yesterday and I became very syked after watching the beginning previews of an upcoming movie called Earth. Disney will celebrate Earth Day 2009 (April 22nd) with the debut of Earth, the first feature-length nature documentary from its new production banner called Disney Nature. Earth supposedly captures some of the rarest and most beautiful imagery of the planet and wildlife ever videoed; and I believe it after watching the movie trailer on the "big screen". My favorite scene from the trailer is when the baby wood duck leaps from his hollow and falls to the ground.

Check out the trailer, it's MUST SEE!

I watched the trailer. I recognized that many clips of footage came directly from the BBC documentary series "Planet Earth" that aired about a year and a half ago on Discovery Channel. The polar bears, the elephants, the ducks falling from the tree, the breaching shark, and the bird mating dance all were the exact scenes from the "Planet Earth" documentary. I was curious what exactly was going on here. But then found out that the makers of Planet Earth (the BBC) abbreviated their series (which consists of 11 hour-long episodes) into a regular feature-length movie to be watched in a single sitting. I guess they're trying to reach a broader audience through the theaters. The UK version of this movie was narrated by Patrick Stewart. Apparently Disney and the discovery channel have simply made a deal with the BBC to release the movie in U.S. theaters, with James Earl Jones as the narrator of the American version.

Anyway, I recommend you rent the DVD's (or better yet, blu-rays. . . it's amazing in HD) of the original documentary. It is amazing indeed. Of course, seeing it on the big screen will be awesome as well.
